The European Union launches a new aid program, called WiFi4EU, aimed at promoting the installation of free Wi-Fi hotspots in public places
in the heart of landlocked areas. The WiFi4EU aid allocation procedure is innovative in its simplicity,
it only requires registering on a web platform provided for this purpose.
A privileged contact for local authorities, E-kipeo Wifi is of course mobilized to support you
in the implementation of WiFi4EU if you intend to benefit from it.

FOR WHOM?

This assistance is open to municipalities, communities of municipalities, communities of agglomerations, urban communities, inter-municipal unions, mixed unions, territorial public establishments, metropolises/metropolitan poles, territorial and rural balance poles, overseas communities. The European Union has estimated the number of local communities concerned by this aid to be between 6 and 8,000. Of course, the distribution of this aid is carried out "in the respect for a geographical balance between all EU countries ". This means that WiFi4EU only concerns about a hundred projects in France. Among the rare conditions of this aid, there is the obligation that these WiFi terminals do not no “duplication with existing free private or public offers having similar characteristics”.

HOW ?

The aid application procedure set up by the European Union is intended to simple and unbureaucratic. All procedures are carried out online at the following address: WiFi4EU.
The EU finances the equipment and installation costs, through a coupon directly given to the technical service provider which equips the community with Wi-Fi terminals and manages the network. A list of approved suppliers has also been drawn up by the EU.
The allocation of funds is based on the principle of " first come first served ", with a first call for projects in mid-March 2018.
As this is a simplified aid procedure, the level of mobile coverage in the location concerned does not constitute a priority criterion for eligibility for European aid.
Similarly, communities that register on the WiFi4EU platform are not required to attach a project or technical file on the Wi-Fi network to be deployed in order to benefit from WiFi4EU. However, the community benefiting from the aid undertakes to maintain the subsidized network for at least three years.

HOW MUCH ?

Through the principle of coupons directly addressed to the Wi-Fi provider, the EU supports 100% of the Wi-Fi equipment in question in the limit
of 15,000 euros.
The main counterpart of this financial aid is that the name of the network is standardized in the colors of WiFi4EU.
Likewise, it is not It is not possible to use the personal data of connected users, or to make commercial use of this network.

WHEN ?

Five waves of applications are planned over the next two years. The first wave begins mid-March 2018. The waves of applications remain open for 6-8 weeks., in order to give municipalities enough time to register.
A municipality not selected during the first wave of applications may still apply in the next ones.

FOR WHAT ?

Adopted by the European Parliament in September 2017, WiFi4EU is a new aid programme, with a budget of 120 million euros by 2019, aimed at promoting the implementation of Free Wi-Fi hotspots installed in rural and remote areas from European Union (EU) countries.

This program should enable services and public spaces that do not yet have one to equip themselves with a Free, open, secure and quality WiFi.
